From September 29 to October 20, two INTERPLAST surgical teams led by Dr. Gie Vandehult (plastic and reconstructive surgery) and Dr. Hubert Sax (general surgery) worked at Mua Mission Hospital in Malawi.
During their stay, the two teams each saw around 250 patients, 130 of whom were operated on. The surgical interventions ranged from reconstructive surgery to general surgical procedures, which made a decisive contribution to improving the patients’ quality of life.
Special attention was paid to the involvement of the local team at Mua Mission Hospital. The surgeons not only performed the operations, but also trained the local staff “on the fly” in various surgical skills. These training measures are of central importance in promoting sustainable medical standards and strengthening the local healthcare system.
The MC Foundation would like to thank INTERPLAST and all those involved from Sweden and Germany for their commitment and support, which made it possible to carry out this important aid mission. The experience and knowledge shared during this time will continue to have a positive impact on medical care in the region. The next missions are already planned for March and October 2025.
We are also working with the clinic management and health experts in the country to develop concepts for the further training of Malawian medical and clinical officers and measures for cross-financing.
